Dear Association Leaders,
As we stand on the precipice of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, associations have a unique and crucial role to play in shaping the way AI is incorporated into industries and professions. Associations are the standard-bearers and thought leaders for their respective fields, and the time has come for them to embrace the opportunities that AI presents while addressing the legitimate concerns surrounding its use.
The influence of professional associations stretches across entire industries and professions, placing them in a unique position of authority. Associations have the power to create a ripple effect, with their actions and decisions impacting both organizations and individuals across their field. This unique vantage point empowers associations to establish governance practices and ethical standards for AI usage, not only within their organizations but also as the guiding force for their professions.
Privacy, transparency, equity, and biases are just a few of the legitimate concerns that surround AI. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into the fabric of our professional lives, it is essential that associations address these concerns head-on. By doing so, they can ensure that AI is deployed in a manner that benefits all stakeholders while minimizing potential harm.
To accomplish this, association leaders must be well-versed in what AI is, and perhaps more importantly, what it is not. Understanding the current capabilities and limitations of AI, as well as its potential future developments, will allow leaders to make informed decisions about its implementation.
This understanding must be accompanied by an open, transparent conversation about AI. Associations must facilitate a dialogue among their members, industry partners, and the public, in order to develop a collective understanding of the technology's implications. This conversation should not be confined to experts alone; it is essential that all voices be heard, as the ramifications of AI will affect everyone.
The urgency of this issue cannot be overstated. AI is not a distant concept that can be relegated to future planning; it is here, and it is evolving rapidly. Associations that fail to engage with AI now risk being left behind, as their industries and professions adapt to this transformative technology.
To meet this challenge, professional associations must take the lead in establishing governance practices and ethical standards for AI usage. By doing so, they can ensure that the AI revolution brings about positive change, rather than exacerbating existing inequalities or creating new ethical dilemmas. The opportunity to shape the trajectory of AI in a manner that benefits all stakeholders is within our grasp, but only if we act now.
I urge association leaders to educate themselves on the topic of AI, foster open and transparent conversations, and embrace their unique position of authority to establish governance practices and ethical standards for implementing AI. The AI revolution is upon us, and the time to plan a response is now. The future of our industries and professions will be shaped by the actions we take today.
