DigitalNow 2018: Digital Transformation – How to Build an Agile Association

Once again, the wizards at Fusion Productions assembled the venue, the content, and the attendees from across the association ecosystem to deliver another amazing digitalNow conference!  This year’s unifying theme was Digital Transformation with a concentrated focus on the intersection of strategy and tactics to enable the Agile Association.
AI, Blockchain, and the Future of Work were just a few of the contemporary topics addressed at the conference capped off by the trademark Digital Transformation Lab allowing attendees to practice using the tools they will need back home.
For those who were unable to attend, here are my takeaways:

  1. Start Here… Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast – Peter Drucker is credited with the axiom and it was evident in the research presented and in the shared experiences of the attendees.  Studies show that the major reasons why digital transformations fail are: non-supportive culture, inability to apply the right data, not having the right talent and ‘fighting the legacy battle’. Don’t forget the core competency of change management as you begin your own digital transformation.
  2. Strategy, not Technology drives Digital Transformation – AI, Blockchain, Robotics, Deep Analytics; headline topics that make our heads swim.  Which of these will provide the most benefit to our associations? We were reminded that the digital journey is not a one-dimensional effort.  In fact, the Digital Transformation Readiness Assessment and Lab emphasized the urgent need to focus on strategy as well as technology elements.
  3. The Nature of Work will Change – As technology creates structural changes in business models, one side effect will be job displacement.  This situation is not new. In 1933, the economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that the advancement of technology would create widespread unemployment “due to our discovery of means of economizing the use of labor outrunning the pace at which we can find new uses for labor”. (Essays in persuasion, pp. 358–73.)  A more recent study at Oxford University predicts that 47% of US jobs may be lost to smart robots in the next 10-15 years. (The Future of Employment,
  4. The Democratization of Deep Analytics – data is the fuel of digital transformation.  Tools such as Watson-as-a-Service are enabling association leaders to collate siloed data into meaningful information.  These tools are now available at price points accessible to most associations.

digitalNow remains one of my ‘must-attend’ events every year.  As a strategist, technologist and ‘disruption-eer’, this conference consistently adds to my body of knowledge and creates a safe place to collaborate with practitioners from across the association spectrum.
